Wisconsin Wins in Illinois Economic Migration

Date: October 13, 2015

Wisconsin ranks third in gaining economic migrants from ailing Illinois.

According to a 2015 analysis of 2010-2013 U.S. Census data from Northern Illinois University’s Center for Governmental Studies, Wisconsin gained 93,469 taxpayers from the state. That was second only to Indiana, which gained 110,075. Meanwhile, Missouri came in third, claiming 87,782 former Illinois residents.

“There are many factors at work here, and census information only tells us so much,” said Sherrie Taylor, a researcher at CGS. “But we do know that most of those who left in recent years took jobs in those other states, so that suggests economic factors – either better opportunities or perhaps concerns about Illinois’ delicate financial health.”
