Who says non-election years are
boring in Tallahassee? Your legislators are in town for Special Session B to
redraw the Congressional Districts as mandated by the Florida Supreme Court. In
Florida, as in most other states, the Legislature is required to redraw the
Congressional and the state Senate and House districts every 10 years. They did
in 2012, but earlier this year, the Court threw out their latest work, citing
violations of the “Fair Districts” standards that require that maps be drawn
unbiasedly to a particular party or individual.
With a deadline of noon Friday, August 21,
the debate rages on, and both sides of the aisle have cause for concern, as
does small business.
Thirty-plus year NFIB member Congressman Dan Webster, an obvious small-business
ally, and moderate Democrat Congresswoman Gwen Graham, who frequently sides
with NFIB on key issues, could both be caught in the crosshairs.

While Special Session B ends this week, the redistricting madness certainly
does not. Special Session C is already scheduled for October 19 – November 6 to
redraw the Senate districts in accordance with the Court.
