Washington’s small business employment grew 0.26 percent in April, according to the Small Business Index from Intuit.
However, on the revenue side, the news was bad: Across the country, revenues per small business declined 0.3 percent, led by real estate and retail. April was the sixth straight month of revenue declines for small businesses.
“This six-month drop in revenue in non-recessionary times is unprecedented,” said Susan Woodward, the economist who works with Intuit to produce the Small Business Employment and Revenue Indexes.
Washington’s 0.26 percent increase in small business employment was better than California’s (.09) and Oregon’s (0.17), but not as good as Idaho’s (.84).
In other findings from the study, hourly employees at small businesses across the country worked slightly fewer hours during the month and total compensation per employee also dropped slightly.
The study covers firms with fewer than 20 employees.
