VIDEO: NFIB Endorses Thom Tillis for Senate

Date: September 24, 2014

The National Federation of Independent Business, North Carolina’s and America’s leading small-business association, today endorsed Thom Tillis for the U.S. Senate.

“Our members support the candidates who support small business, and Speaker Tillis’ record speaks for itself,” said Lisa Goeas, NFIB vice president for Political and Grassroots. “He understands that we can’t afford to burden North Carolina’s and America’s job creators with unnecessary regulations and excessive taxes that make it even harder for them to grow and create jobs.”

In addition to today’s endorsement, NFIB  launched a flight of radio and online ads asking voters to support Tillis in what experts believe is a pivotal race for the US Senate. The effort is part of the NFIB’s Vote for Main Street campaign. Click

NFIB also released a Thom Tillis candidate webpage on its National Election Center website, where voters can go to find tools that make it easy to volunteer, donate and support Tillis.

The website also features a video of a North Carolina small business owner, who explains how Washington is making things harder for Main Street and why Thom Tillis is his choice for U.S. Senate.

As speaker of the state House of Representatives, Tillis has shepherded several key small-business bills through the legislative process. He stood up for small business by voting to repair the state’s broken unemployment insurance system, reduce corporate and individual income taxes and repeal the estate tax, also known as the “death tax,” which made it difficult for many small-business owners to pass their businesses to their children and grandchildren.

Speaker Tillis’ record on small business stands in sharp contrast to his opponents. Kay Hagan earned a 30 percent NFIB Voting Record in the 112th Congress, voting against small business on issues including tax reform (S. Amdt. 156), a tax on carbon emissions (S. Amdt. 261) and repealing the federal estate tax (S. Amdt. 307).

“Thom Tillis clearly understands the challenges facing our small, family businesses,” said Gregg Thompson, state director of NFIB/North Carolina. “His commitment, his record and his energy and enthusiasm make him far and away the best candidate for U.S. Senate. And this fall, our members will be mobilizing in force to support Thom Tillis and let North Carolina voters know why Thom is the only choice for Senate for Main Street communities, businesses and families.”

NFIB has over 8,000 dues-paying members in North Carolina representing a cross section of the state’s economy.

Tillis’ endorsement comes from NFIB’s SAFE (Save America’s Free Enterprise) Trust, the association’s political action committee, and is based on the candidate’s positions regarding key small-business issues including health care, taxes, and labor and regulatory issues.

Small-business owners and their employees vote in high numbers and are known for actively recruiting friends, family members and acquaintances to go to the polls. NFIB will encourage its members to help turn out the small-business vote in November.
