Unemployment Insurance Costs Continue To Rise For Connecticut Employers

Date: September 17, 2014

In
addition to the “special assessment” bills sent out last month to all
Connecticut employers – approximately $7.50 per full-time employee –
employers are also expected to face higher federal unemployment trust account
(FUTA) charges later in the year, again, due to the ongoing insolvency of the
state’s unemployment insurance fund.
Connecticut’s FUTA charges are expected to be among the highest in the
nation.  At the State Department of
Labor, the Employment
Security Advisory Board
, made up of representatives from business and labor
organizations, among others, has been considering options for changes to the
system that would help move the state towards solvency.  Topics of unemployment insurance reform are
also likely to be considered by the Connecticut General Assembly when the new
legislature convenes for their regular session in January 2015.  For more information or questions about a
particular assessment or charge, employers should contact the Connecticut
Department of Labor, Unemployment Insurance Division.
NFIB/Connecticut will continue to work
with legislators and the administration to fight against unemployment insurance
reforms that are unfairly balanced on the backs of small business owners.
