TODAY'S RALLY NOTHING MORE THAN A POLITICAL PLOY
The following statement may be attributed to National
Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Maine State Director David Clough in
reference to today’s rally to “improve workers lives through ballot
initiatives.”
“No one understands the frustration over sluggish
economic growth more than the small business community in Maine. However, being
generous with other people’s money in terms of imposing an astronomically high
minimum wage on Portland employers does nothing to ensure economic fairness. In
fact, forcing the wage increase regardless of a business’s condition or a
worker’s productivity is a sure fire way to impede any economic growth post the
Great Recession.
Special interest groups are hijacking the minimum wage
issue and attempting to use it as a political device but make no mistake, the
hard working job creators in the small business community will be
disproportionately impacted by any increase to the minimum wage and so will the
creation of any new jobs for our state.”
