This Week in Michigan
NFIB Michigan Weekly
Update November 10, 2014
LEGISLATURE
- Michigan House & Senate
The Michigan House
and Senate are scheduled to be in session this week for the beginning of the
lame duck session.
ISSUES
- Gas Tax – Road Funding
Post-election
efforts will resume on finding a solution to increase road funding. Word has it
that a 2 percent hike in the sales tax (6 to 8 percent) is one of the options
being considered in addition to previous efforts to hike the pump tax and
registration fees. NFIB members do not support raising gas taxes to fund roads.
Earlier this year, NFIB supported a House plan that would have brought roughly
$450 million to roads by earmarking more state revenue from the general fund
without increasing taxes. However, the House plan stalled in the Senate. Go HERE for more information on NFIB activity on road
funding.
- Term Limits
Every lame duck session there is talk about modifying Michigan’s
term limits law to extend the period of time a lawmaker can serve. This year is
no exception. NFIB members like the Michigan Term limits law just as it is. Go
HERE for more information on NFIB activity on term limits.
- Prevailing Wage
Although there have
been discussions about moving forward on repealing Michigan’s wasteful
Prevailing Wage Law during the lame duck session, Senate Majority Leader Randy
Richardville has indicated no willingness to take up the issue. NFIB feels that
next session will offer a better opportunity to take on the issue due to the
more conservative make-up of both Chambers after the recent elections. It would
be better to achieve a meaningful victory on this important issue in the new
session than settle for a watered down version that would likely come out of
the lame duck session. Go HERE for more information on
NFIB activity on Prevailing Wage.
