NFIB Joins Sen. Garcia and Rep. Fant to Highlight Small Business Saturday Sales Tax Holiday Legislation

Tallahassee, FL, February 16, 2015 – The National Federation of Independent Business/Florida today joined Sen. Rene Garcia and Rep. Jay Fant to discuss the Small Business Saturday sales tax holiday legislation, Senate Bill 384.

“Local businesses have been enthusiastic about Small Business Saturday from its inception, but they’re thrilled that the Florida Legislature wants to give Floridians an even bigger incentive to visit their smaller, independently owned stores on the Saturday after Thanksgiving,” said NFIB/Florida Executive Director Bill Herrle. “Florida’s commitment to small business owners has been overwhelming, but a Small Business Saturday sales tax holiday is an exciting way to give these small local shops a boost and give shoppers even more reasons to visit their neighbors on Main Street as part of their holiday shopping.”

Held each year on the Saturday following Thanksgiving, Small Business Saturday is a day to support the local businesses that create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighborhoods around the country.

Senate Bill 384 calls for a one-day sales tax holiday on that day, where sales tax will not be collected on items purchased at small businesses. It defines a small business as having less than $3.3 million in taxable sales. Rep. Jay Fant is the House sponsor of the companion bill, House Bill 259.

According to a survey co-conducted by NFIB in 2014, half of U.S. consumers report that they are aware of Small Business Saturday. Among those who are aware, 82 percent said they planned to patronize a small, independently owned business on Small Business Saturday. Seventy seven percent of the respondents say Small Business Saturday makes them want to shop all year long.
