Take Action: Contact your legislators about the Consumer Fraud Act

Date: February 18, 2015

It only takes one lawsuit to ruin your business! Legal bills, time
not focused on your business, and the frustration of dealing with
unnecessary legal hoops could be enough to jeopardize your hard work and
company. You understand this, but many of our state legislators do not.
The NFIB/NJ urgently needs your help to tell Trenton it’s time to stop
fighting business and instead fight fraud.

As you may know, the
New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act (CFA) was enacted in 1960 to protect New
Jersey citizens against deceptive business practices. Over the years,
the law has been amended by the legislature and expanded by the courts
into an enormous and unwieldy piece of legislation. Compliance is
difficult, especially for small business owners. As written, the law is
prone to abuse, incentivizes unnecessary litigation and makes even
honest violations extraordinarily costly.

We urge you to reach
out your members of the legislature and ask them to hold a hearing so
they can hear first-hand how the state’s Consumer Fraud Act is harming
small businesses.
