Survey Shows Chicago-Area Firms Remain Cautious About Hiring

Date: April 23, 2014

Hesitancy Remains Despite Expectation Of Improved Sales

While a near-majority of small and medium-sized
businesses in the Chicago region expect their sales to rise in the coming six
months, few are planning on adding full-time workers over that period. According
to the semi-annual PNC Bank survey, 47% of small and medium-sized businesses in
the region expect business to increase in the next six months, but only 12%
expect to add full-time employees. Part of the reason is that only 33% of those
surveyed expect their earnings to rise during the period. Business owners
interviewed by the Chicago Tribune also indicated that difficulties obtaining
loans, concerns about Obamacare, and potential increases in the minimum wage
continue to burden their operations.
