NFIB/Ohio lobbied the Ohio Legislature to pass House Joint Resolution 4 (HJR 4). This Resolution simply limits the ability of a select group of individuals from establishing a monopoly, oligopoly or cartel of an economic nature that benefits one group over similarly situated groups by guaranteeing it in the Ohio Constitution.
After a survey of our members regarding HJR 4, we received a clear directive to support the measure. A consistent response and message from our members is the opposition to any monopoly, including a constitutionally sanctioned one.
We recognize the importance of the representative democracy we have in place, as well as the ability to utilize the citizen initiative process for both statutes and constitutional amendments. As these processes have been undertaken over the past 100 plus years, our members have consistently conveyed changing Ohio’s governing document, the Ohio Constitution, is a process that should be thoughtfully undertaken and carefully exercised.
HJR4 does not eliminate the aforementioned process. Ultimately, Ohio voters will decide if they believe HJR 4 is appropriate this coming November.
