STATEMENT: Small Business Thanks Governor, Lawmakers for Fiscal Conservatism

Date: January 14, 2014

MONTGOMERY, Jan. 14, 2014--Rosemary Elebash, state director of the National Federation of Independent Business, made the following statement today in advance of Gov. Robert Bentley's State of the State Address:

"We're confident Governor Bentley will maintain his stellar record when it comes to fiscal discipline, and we believe he'll continue doing everything he can to help Alabama's economy grow without burdening small business with higher taxes. Small-business owners know you can't spend money you don't have, and we expect the governor to continue looking for ways to make the best use of the revenue the state already collects.

"Governor Bentley has shown true leadership in opposing Washington's bait-and-switch Medicaid expansion. It might sound like a good deal in the short term, but longer term, it will inevitably lead to higher taxes, especially on small businesses, and make things worse for Alabama's ecomony and working families.

"We also expect him to join legislative leaders in holding the line on any attempts to raise the state's minimum wage, a well-meaning but wrong-headed strategy that economists say would actually lead to fewer jobs for those who need them."

NFIB/Alabama is the state's leading small-business association, with members in all 67 counties.
