STATEMENT: Proposed EPA Requirement Would Hurt Kentucky's Economy

Date: June 02, 2014

Tom Underwood, state director of NFIB/Kentucky, made the following statement in response to the Obama administration plan to require power plants to reduce carbon emissions 30 percent by 2030, compared with levels in 2005:

“The proposed rule requiring a 30-percent cut in emissions from coal-fired electrical generation plans would have a devastating effect on Kentucky’s economy.

“Not only would thousands of coal-related jobs be lost, but energy costs for small businesses would increase.

“Higher energy costs would kill off one of the best tools we have for economic development in the commonwealth. A number of industries, including steel and aluminum production, have plants here primarily because of our relatively affordable rates.

“If the administration wants to support small business and help create jobs, it should expand our sources of energy, not limit them.”
