STATEMENT: Budget, Medicaid Expansion Should be Separate Issues

Date: March 05, 2014

NFIB/Virginia State Director Nicole Riley released the following statement today urging a 'clean budget':

“NFIB urges Gov. Terry McAuliffe and members of the General Assembly to approve a ‘clean budget’ by this week’s end of session deadline by removing the issue of Medicaid expansion from budget discussions. Medicaid expansion should be addressed separately during a special session.

“Our members have looked at this issue from every perspective and believe expanding an underfunded, cumbersome and poorly administered program like Medicaid would be irresponsible.

“NFIB members understand the call by many to expand Medicaid and help the state’s poor. To do so without meaningful reform, however, would make it very difficult to balance our budget and would result in slashing essential services and calls for higher taxes, which would slow growth.”

NFIB/Virginia is the commonwealth's leading small-business association with about 5,500 dues-paying members representing a cross section of Virginia's economy.
