STATEMENT: 3rd Straight Drop in Workers Comp Costs the Result of Hard-Won Reforms

Date: September 03, 2015

Jerrod Shouse, Oklahoma director of the National Federation of Independent Business, today responded to news that workers’ compensation costs in the state have fallen for the third consecutive year:
“This is great news for small business, because it means the reforms we fought for are paying off.
“Our members told us that one of the biggest issues holding back small business was the cost of workers’ comp. Our court-based workers’ compensation system simply didn’t work. It was costly, adversarial, and unnecessarily complex, and one big workers’ comp claim can be the straw that breaks the camel’s back for some small businesses.
“The reforms passed in 2013 and signed into law by the governor brought much-needed common sense to the process, and that is reflected in the savings we’re seeing today.”
NFIB/Oklahoma is the state’s leading small-business association, with about 4,000 small-business members representing a large cross section of the state’s economy.
