State No. 1 in the Nation, Says CNBC

Date: July 11, 2013

Nice graphic! The above map is CNBC’s for its America’s Top States for Business 2013 story, which it rolled out July 8 through July 10. The cable network’s annual rankings of states should give South Dakota policymakers some pride, but there are a few cautionary notes as well.

Carrying the day for South Dakota in its No. 1 overall grade were the cost of doing business (No. 1), business friendliness (No. 2) and economy (No. 6) categories. But the state’s marks for technology and innovation (48th), access to capital (39th), education (30th) and cost of living (26th) were a drag.

CNBC’s rating of South Dakota comes on the heels of equally good marks recently issued by the American Legislative Exchange Council, the Tax Foundation and the Mercatus Center at George Mason University.
