State Government Spending: $8.1 Billion

June 30 marks the end of Nebraska’s current fiscal year. In fiscal year 2013-2014, Nebraska’s state government spent approximately $8.12 billion, according to NebraskaSpending.gov, a site operated by the state treasurer’s office.
Nearly 42 percent of the state’s spending — or $3.4 billion — went to pay for programs and employees under the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), including Medicaid and other social welfare programs.
Another 18 percent — or $1.5 billion — was used to pay for K-12 education and state aid to schools. Nearly 10 percent — or around $835 million — was used by the Department of Roads.
