NFIB reminds shoppers to visit Main Street as a way to celebrate America’s Entrepreneurs

Washington, D.C., May 4, 2015 – The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) announced today that it has partnered with the federal Small Business Administration to cosponsor this year’s National Small Business Week, which begins today.

“Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy,” said NFIB President and CEO Dan Danner.  “They create more jobs than any other sector and represent half of the nation’s economic output.  From the earliest days of the country it’s also been the way upward for ordinary Americans, including the poorest.”

This week, May 4th – May 8th, NFIB and the SBA are reminding Americans to shop small.  It’s an occasion to appreciate the 28 million entrepreneurs who represent 99.7 percent of the nation’s employers. Small businesses generate nearly 50 percent of the annual U.S. Gross Domestic Product and employ more than half of the private sector work force.

Small Business Week aims to remind Americans that supporting local businesses is the best way to support their local economies.

“The money that you spend at the bakery, the florist, or the local auto mechanic stays in your community,” said Danner.  “That’s good for communities, good for states and ultimately the key to our national economic strength.”

Danner said Small Business Week is a good reminder to all Americans that when they shop locally, they’re helping their own communities.

“The money that folks spend at local stores and with local contractors for the most part gets invested right back into the community,” he said.  “So this is a good week to visit your neighbors in business and do something good for your community.”
