SMALL BUSINESS TO LAWMAKERS: TIME FOR SOLUTIONS NOT MORE PROBLEMS

DOVER (May 21, 2015): The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) put lawmakers on notice yesterday regarding HB 140, a measure that would increase 14 vehicle related fees. Legislators throughout the state were warned of NFIB’s opposition to the bill and encouraged to go back to the drawing board to come up with real reform for Delaware tax payers.

“Any talk of increasing fees and raising the gas tax should not be confused as sound policy making decisions. This bill is simply a lazy attempt to raise the money for unfunded projects already in the pipeline.” According to NFIB Delaware Public Policy Director, Timothy Goodrich. “Without meaningful reforms, there is absolutely no way we will support additional fees on the already overburdened tax payers of Delaware.”

In the letter to lawmakers, NFIB noted that in the most recent edition of Rich States Poor States, Delaware was ranked in the bottom half for both economic performance and economic outlook for 2015. The reason for the abysmal rankings has a lot to do with imposing additional taxes and fees on businesses and if this bill is passed, there will be 14 more reasons for Delaware to do even worse next year.

“Many of Delaware’s small businesses are continuing to struggle to survive after the economic recession. Piling on tax or vehicle-related fees on top of the increase to the state minimum wage rate just last year, leaves many of our members asking, “Where does this end?” When will the State of Delaware stop reaching into the pockets of small business owners to temporarily solve a bigger spending problem?” Questioned Goodrich.
