SMALL BUSINESS SEEKING REAL CHANGE IN MAINE TAX CLIMATE

AUGUSTA (January 5, 2015) – Today, the Maine Chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) is looking forward to what Governor LePage will announce as his plan for true tax relief for the residents of Maine and small business owners.
“As the new legislative year begins to take shape, small business owners are optimistic that Governor LePage will propose true relief from the state’s tax structure,” said NFIB Maine state director David Clough. “NFIB members have said in the past that they welcome income tax relief but they have opposed significant expansion of the sales tax or increases in other taxes in order to pay for revenue-neutral relief.”
Each time a significant tax reform proposal has been issued in Maine, NFIB’s official position of support or opposition to the plan has been decided by a survey of its thousands of members in the state. This year, the process will be no different.
“NFIB determines major policy positions on behalf of its members through a voting process that allows all members an opportunity to voice their opinions on prevalent issues.” Continued Clough,  “Once details of the proposal are made public, we will send out a ballot to our members and determine NFIB’s stance on the pending legislation.”
