SMALL BUSINESS EXTREMELY INTERESTED IN SPECIFICS OF GOVERNOR’S JOBS BUDGET

PROVIDENCE (March 12, 2015): As Governor Raimondo prepares to address Rhode Island’s budget issues, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) members statewide are curious just what her jobs budget will entail.

“Small business owners certainly support and welcome Governor Raimondo’s focus on job growth. Helping to make sure that Rhode Islanders have opportunities to acquire essential job skills is critical to economic growth and our state government desperately needs innovation and reform,” NFIB Rhode Island State Director Bill Vernon said. “But it is also important to remember that Rhode Island’s economy is based on small businesses as much as any state in the nation and they will grow and prosper when the cost of job creation is reduced.”

Governor Raimondo is scheduled to address lawmakers during a speech designed to lay out her priorities for the next fiscal year at the Statehouse on Thursday night. She has said repeatedly that creating jobs is a top priority but most of the specifics of her plan are not yet known.

“There is much work that needs to be done in Rhode Island and small business owners remain hopeful that our new Governor is willing and able to make the difficult choices that will allow Rhode Island to climb the steep hill back into the policy mainstream with other states. More than another government program, what entrepreneurs need from state government are lower costs and streamlined regulatory burdens,” Vernon concluded.
