Small Business Bills Move to the Governor's Desk

The 2014 regular session of the Legislature is winding down. Here’s a look at some of the bills we supported that have already been signed into law:

HB 260: Sales tax and use tax; exempt of finance charges and freight/delivery charges.
HB 611: The Health Care Sharing Ministries Freedom to Share Act.
HB 680: Products liability; include designers in protection.
HB 1317: State agency purchasing; require procurement portal to provide information to vendors and include on Transparency Mississippi website. (similar to SB 2259).
SB 2283: Agritourism; delete repealer on sections regulating agritourism.
SB 2689: Local government; prohibit from limiting background checks by employers.
These bills have passed the Legislature and are awaiting action by the governor

HB 1328: Small Business & Grocer Investment Act; create to encourage consumption of affordable healthy foods in underserved communities.
SB 2473: The Prohibition Against Employer Intimidation Act.
SB 2653: Labor unions; prohibit mass picketing of a residence or place of business.
SB 2797: Mississippi Employment Fairness Act; create.
HB 799: Taxation; authorize alternate method of apportioning for income tax, revise appellate procedure for appeals.
SB 2934: Exempt from sales taxation sales of certain truck tractors. (similar to HB 1348) This levels the playing field for Mississippi’s Trucking industry with Arkansas, Louisiana and Tennessee by exempting truck-tractors and semi-trailers used in interstate commerce from the 3% state sales tax. The bill is expected to save $3.4 million a year. .
SB 2958: Unemployment compensation; create the State Workforce Investment Fund and provide for contributions to the fund.
HB 641: Commercial driver’s license; require Mississippi Department of Public Safety to provide electronic transmission of medical cards.
