SMALL BUSINESS APPLAUDS GOVERNOR PENCE’S STATE OF THE STATE

INDIANAPOLIS (January 13, 2015) The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) was pleased this evening to hear Governor Pence commit to continuing to govern Indiana with a balanced budget while focusing on simplifying the tax code and preventing property tax increases.
“Governor Pence has succeeded in holding the line on spending while still funding those things that are a priority to small business.” Said NFIB Indiana State Direct Barbara Quandt. “We have great confidence in his ability to continue to maintain strong reserves and avoid new debt.”
Indiana is one of few states across the nation that does not have a balanced budget requirement in its constitution. Pence said this evening that it was a tribute to the public servants in the room that they have adhered to that practice in recent years, however it is time to address the requirement legislatively to ensure that the Hoosier economy remains sound.
“The legislature has been called upon to pass a balanced budget proposal and we are hopeful that they will be able to work together in a bipartisan fashion to deliver a bill to the Governor’s desk.” Continued Quandt, “Ensuring that future administrations in Indiana do not overspend will help our members to have confidence in the stability of our economy. Where there is economic confidence, there is prosperity in the small business sector.”
Pence went on to call upon the legislature to simplify the tax code and take steps towards the prevention of a rapid increase on property taxes for Indiana’s family farmers. “The Governor has proven since he entered office that his desire to protect small businesses, including farmers, is not just rhetoric.” Said Quandt. “Tonight, he continued to build on his record as a pro growth, pro small business leader that will propel Indiana to even greater successes in 2015.”
