Washington,
DC (January 6, 2016)
–Later today, the House of Representatives is expected to
pass a reconciliation bill that would undo much of the Affordable Care Act. This
would mark the first time the House and Senate have worked together to send
significant repeal of the law to the President’s desk. Small business owners continue
to oppose the law, which has driven up costs and increased the complexity of
providing health insurance.

“Today’s
vote will show that much of Obamacare could be undone through a simple majority
vote in the House and Senate,” said National
Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) CEO Dan Danner
. “Small business
owners fought the law all the way to the Supreme Court and will continue to
support its repeal and replacement. Without fundamental change, the law will
continue to drive up costs and make providing coverage more complex.”

Since
the signing of the law in 2009, NFIB has regularly conducted research into its
effects on small businesses. Last year’s study, released in November,
showed that 63 percent of small business owners reported higher health
insurance premiums between July 2014 and July 2015. Only eight percent of
owners last year reported a decrease in premiums while 27 percent said their
rates remained the same. Of those experiencing higher premium costs, nearly 60
percent of them had average per employee increases of more than 10 percent last
year.

“President
Obama will certainly veto this bill and continue to turn a blind eye to the
damage being done by his signature law,” said Danner. “While he’s said he would
be willing to make meaningful changes to the law, we’ve never seen a concrete
effort to fix what is clearly broken. Small business owners want the next
President to work on making health care more affordable, the biggest struggle
they face in providing coverage.”
