Small Biz Hiring Good Though Unemployment Expected to Increase
NFIB Jobs Report shows that
despite the best job growth in a decade, small business hiring plans fall a
bit.
Washington, D.C., April 2, 2015 – The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Chief Economist
William C. Dunkelberg issued the following comments on
the March
Jobs Report. The findings are based on the NFIB monthly Small Business
Economic Trends survey. The survey was conducted
in March and reflects the response of 575 small businesses:
“Reported hiring in March was one
of the best readings in the last decade eclipsing the substantial readings in
January and February, but this might have reflected the heavy hiring over the
past three months.”
Even with a net increase of 0.18 workers per firm, survey data showed
that there was a 5 percentage point drop in the net percent of owners
increasing employment to negative one. The percent of owners hiring or trying
to hire was also down 3 points to 50 percent.
The NFIB data anticipates a weaker March job
number than in February, closer to 250,000, with a higher unemployment rate unless
labor force departures increase.
“The net percent of business owners planning to create new jobs is
down 2 points to 10 percent, which is still a solid number,” Dunkelberg
continued. “Considering the weather and
union actions in the western ports, we are actually surprised how strong the
jobs number was in March.”
