Why I Read It: I was at my friend’s house, and it was just lying on his counter. At the time, I was just starting to launch my online store for my jewelry line, so I asked if I could borrow it. I read this book about two and half months before the online store went live. I’m so grateful I did because it helped me with the launch.
Biggest Takeaway: Jim Collins wanted to express to readers that it’s not an overnight job to take your business from good to great. Rather, to succeed, it takes several consistent small steps that get you to your [business] goal, not one thing that gives you a big break. It was a lesson that I had to hear. I had to prepare myself and say, “This is going to take a long time, and I will break through.”
Applying Lessons Learned: It has directly impacted my business by giving me insight on how to operate my business using Collins’ flywheel method. It’s the idea that business success isn’t instant, but rather, reaching the top requires a continuous momentum of steps that push [your business] onward until you become a great company.
Part of that is I stopped aiming to be just a really good company and started taking the steps that [my business] needs to be a great company.
For example, with shipping, it takes us normally two to three business days to ship [an order]. Meanwhile, internally, our goal is to get it to that person the next day. Also with supplying my products for boutiques, a large order might take a company a week or two to provide, but internally, we’re making sure that we get that order to them in three to four days. So that it’s always like we’re ahead of the game.
