Alabama Weekly Update: Sick Leave, Property Tax Bills Pass Committee

Date: February 07, 2014

Here's a look at what's happening in the Legislature

Mandatory Leave

Rep. Jack Williams (Birmingham) has introduced HB360, a bill that would prohibit local governments from requiring that private employers grant vacation and other leave to employees. HB360 passed out of committee this week on a vote of 6-0. On the 2008 NFIB/Alabama Member Ballot, 84 percent of small-business owners opposed requiring mandatory leave to employees.

HB108 sponsored by House Speaker Mike Hubbard (Auburn) and Rep. Greg Wren (Montgomery) passed a key Senate Committee. The legislation would simplify the process for filing personal property tax returns with a process for filing online with a shorten form available to small businesses who have less than $10,000 in business personal property tax. NFIB supports the legislation.

Right-to-Work Amendment

SB127 by Sen. Gerald Dial (Lineville) calls for a state constitutional amendment confirming Alabama's status as a right-to-work state, meaning employees would not be required to join a union in order to get a job. NFIB supports the legislation.
