Services Tax Making a Comeback in Florida?

Date: April 01, 2015

A surprise amendment that was trying to find its way onto an initially business-friendly bill raised warning signs for NFIB this week.

NFIB has been pushing tax cuts aimed to specifically bring relief to small business owners – including a reduction in the sales tax on commercial leases, the small business Saturday tax holiday, and cuts to communications services taxes. But opponents of our business-friendly climate attempted to amend the tax relief bill with a proposal that would implement a tax on services.

“The services tax rears its ugly head every few years, and small business owners in Florida vehemently oppose it each time,” said Bill Herrle, NFIB/Florida Executive Director. “They have experienced dealing with the tax in the past, and can attest to the negative impact all business owners will feel if it returns.”

Could you imagine the impact on your business if you had to pay taxes on required and recurring services, such as accounting, legal services, cleaning services, and pest control, just to name a few?

NFIB began meeting with Florida legislators immediately, and with a little help from our members, we were able to defeat the amendment and return the tax cut bill to its business-friendly form.
