SENATES SOLUTION TO FINANCE TRUST FUND DOES NOT IMPRESS SMALL BUSINESS

(DES MOINES) April 27, 2015 – On the heels of a recent gas
tax increase, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) is
expressing frustration with yesterday’s passage of a sales tax increase in the
Senate and hoping the House will have better sense when the legislation is
debated on their side.

“Every time a lawmaker makes the decision to increase taxes
without reducing the size of government it is a loss for the hardworking people
in Iowa doing their best to succeed,” said NFIB Iowa State Director Kristin
Failor. “The gas tax increase was bad enough. It is an embarrassment to the
small business community that the Senate cannot come up with anything more
creative than a sales tax increase.”

Senate File 357 passed out of the Senate Subcommittee
yesterday; however it remains to be seen what, if any, action the House will
take. If made into law, 357 would raise the sales tax to 6 and three-eighths
percent. Any funds raised with the increase would be dedicated to the Iowa
Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund.

“Legislators have failed to fund the Trust Fund for 5 years.
Instead of rolling up their sleeves and actually working to find a solution,
the Senate has taken the easy way out. We can certainly all agree that
enhancing water quality and maintaining our parks is important to the state,
but a tax increase is simply not the solution,” concluded Failor.
