NFIB Calls on President to Stop Sacrificing Economy for a Talking Point

Washington, DC (November 18, 2015) The National Federation of Independent Business applauds members of the Senate who voted yesterday evening to reject the President’s new power plant rule. The regulation from the Environmental Protection Agency would drive up the price of electricity nationwide, harming small business owners and their customers.

“The President’s power plant rule imposes massive costs on consumers and businesses with almost no benefit,” said NFIB Vice President of Public Policy Amanda Austin. “The EPA substantially overstated the effect of its rule on climate change, but yet they pushed through a rule that clearly could never make it through Congress. It seems that the President is willing to act illegally and unconstitutionally just so he can have a talking point.”

Yesterday evening, the NFIB key voted Senate passage of a Congressional Review Act resolution rejecting the EPA’s “Carbon Pollution Emission Guidelines for Existing Stationary Sources: Electric Utility Generating Units.” A copy of the NFIB’s letter to Senators is available here.

The NFIB Small Business Legal Center has joined a lawsuit challenging the authority of the EPA to issue this regulation. NFIB has asked the courts to issue an immediate stay of the rule to spare states from having to push forward with rules that could shut down existing power plants and drive up electric costs.

“If this rule goes into effect, consumers and businesses will see their energy costs spike,” said Austin. “This hits small businesses twice since their costs go up and their customers have less to spend. It’s a government created economic disaster.”
