In a presidential campaign that has so far given short shrift to small business owners, Sen. Marco Rubio turned his focus to jobs and the economy in an August visit to Detroit.
Rubio called for a “pro-growth” agenda in his speech to the Detroit Economic Club, which he delivered at The Westin Book Cadillac in Detroit.
“No city understands the vision and toil it took to build the American Century better than Detroit,” Rubio said. “No city understands the heights attainable through the American Dream better than Detroit. And no city understands the pain of losing that dream — and the importance of restoring it — better than Detroit. And that is why this city, the heart of the old economy, is the perfect place to discuss how we can embrace ‘A New American Economy’— one even grander and richer in opportunity than ever before.”
Rubio outlined a plan that would decrease the corporate income tax rate from 35 to 25 percent. In addition, he proposed allowing small business owners the opportunity to expense all of their business outlays, thus lowering their tax burden.
