HARRISBURG, (October 6, 2015) – The National Federation of
Independent Business, the nation’s leading small-business association, today
announced its endorsements in the upcoming election to fill three vacancies on
the state Supreme Court.
“Small businesses are the driving force behind
Pennsylvania’s economy — producing high-quality products, services, and jobs,”
said Kevin Shivers, executive state director of NFIB Pennsylvania. “NFIB members believe it is vital to
support judicial candidates who will interpret our laws even-handedly and give
small-business owners a fair hearing.”
NFIB endorsed Judge Judy
Olson. Judge Olson currently serves on
the Superior Court. The Superior Court
is one of two intermediate appellate courts in Pennsylvania and hears cases
involving criminal law and civil litigation originating out of the County
Courts of Common Pleas.
“Judge Olson is one
of the most highly respected Judges serving on one of Pennsylvania’s state-wide
courts. We are confident that she will
continue to be knowledgeable and fair when it comes to issues impacting small
business”, said Shivers.
NFIB endorsed Judge
Anne Covey. Judge Covey currently serves
on the Commonwealth Court. The
Commonwealth Court, the state’s other intermediate appellate court, decides
matters relating to banking, insurance and utility regulation and laws
affecting taxation, land use, elections, labor practices, unemployment
compensation and workers compensation.
Judge Covey was also the first woman appointed to Pennsylvania’s Labor
Relations Board, serving from 2002 to 2011.
“Judge Covey has an
established legal expertise in labor and employment law and has proven to be a
fair jurist that does not legislate from the bench”, said Shivers.
NFIB also endorsed
Judge Mike George. Judge George
currently serves as the President Judge on the Court of Common Pleas of Adams
County. He previously served as the
Adam’s County District Attorney.
“From the time I
first met Judge George, I continue to be impressed with his integrity and the
temperament he displays. He holds both
the legal knowledge and the values that we need on our highest court”, said
Shivers.
NFIB has 15,000 small business members in Pennsylvania
representing a cross-section of the state’s economy. The endorsements come from
NFIB Pennsylvania’s SAFE (Save America’s Free Enterprise) Trust, the
association’s state political action committee, and are based on the
candidates’ positions.
Small-business owners and their employees vote in high numbers and
are known for actively recruiting friends, family members and acquaintances to
go to the polls. NFIB will encourage its members to help turn out the
small-business vote for the candidates in November.
