Prince George's County Decides to Hold off on Mandating Paid Leave

Date: November 17, 2015

A proposal that would have mandated paid leave in Prince George’s County died in committee on Tuesday October 13.

The proposed mandate only received the support of two council members; Deni Taveras (D-Adelphi) and Karen R. Toles (D-Suitland). According to a Washington Post article, other members of the committee “said they supported paid sick leave in theory
but wanted more information or believed the issue should be left to the
state.”

NFIB Members have been very vocal about their concerns about mandated paid leave and many say that they cannot afford to offer this benefit and that
it will shrink the economy and cause jobs to vanish. Most small businesses are eager to treat
their workers generously and attract better talent by offering better pay and
benefits. But the practical truth is
that many small businesses just cannot afford to provide additional
benefits.
