'One-Stop Business Portal' Will Be a Big Help to Small Business

Date: March 14, 2015

Gil White, state director of the National Federation of Independent Business, released the following statement today concerning House Bill 2878, legislation creating a “one-stop electronic business portal” for West Virginia businesses:

“HB 2878 is commonsense legislation that brings state government into the 21st century.

“Small businesses spend way too much filing out and filing forms. They fill out one form to apply for a business license and another to pay workers’ comp premiums and another to pay sales and use taxes.

“HB 2878 will streamline all that by allowing employers to accomplish all that through a single state-run website, with a single login and password. They won’t have to fill out redundant forms anymore. They can simply log in, do what they need to do, then get back to work.

“That matters a lot to small businesses. Small-business owners don’t necessarily have the staffs to keep up with and handle paperwork. A lot of times, the person who signs the checks is the same person who stocks the shelves and takes out the trash.

“HB 2878 will let small businesses do more in less time. It’s exactly the kind of change we need to keep West Virginia’s economy moving forward.”

The legislation will provide businesses with online access to all editable forms required by the State Tax Department, Workforce West Virginia, the Insurance Commission, the Division of labor and the Secretary of State’s Office.

It will also permit electronic filing of documents by local government.
