Oklahoma Small Businesses Support Call for Balanced Budget Amendment

Date: March 04, 2015

Jerrod Shouse, state director of the National Federation of Independent Business, released the following statement today concerning House Joint Resolution 1018/Senate Joint Resolution 4, legislation calling for a federal balanced budget amendment.

“Washington could learn a lesson from Oklahoma’s small businesses. Small-business owners know you have to live within your means. You have to stick to a budget. You can’t spend money you don’t have.

“Small-business owners know if you want or need to spend money on this, you won’t be able to afford that.

“Washington doesn’t get it. Washington thinks if you want to spend more money, you either raise taxes or go deeper and deeper into debt and let our kids and grandkids sort it out later.

“That needs to stop.

“That’s why NFIB/Oklahoma supports this legislation. It authorizes state delegates to attend a limited convention of the states, as authorized by Article V of the U.S. Constitution, solely for the purpose of proposing a federal balanced budget amendment.

“Thirty-four states must authorize such a convention. Twenty-five have done so already; 38 states must approve any agreed-upon language in order to ratify the amendment.

“If small-business owners in Oklahoma can stick to a budget, so can our politicians in Washington.”

NFIB/Oklahoma is the state’s leading small-business association with over 4,000 dues-paying members representing a cross section of the state’s economy. Learn more at www.NFIB.com/OK or follow @NFIB_OK on Twitter.
