The owner of Computer Pros' take on small business

In the heartland of country music, one computer business is finding success amid a local booming economy. Small business owner and NFIB/Tennessee member Josh Boyd of Computer Pros in Nashville talks about finding the sweet spot in the tech industry, staying up on the local politics and the perks of being his own boss.

How did you become a small business owner and why?

I saw a void in our industry. There were not a whole lot of e-companies out there that were really customer-focused. I saw that void in the industry and I decided to take a leap of faith and open my own IT company back in 2007. I opened up my first location and hired some employees. As we grew we hired more people and continued to expand our business. Today, Computer Pros has 11 employees.

What makes Tennessee a good place for business?

Specifically Nashville is a booming town and there’s a lot of energy in the air. There are a lot of new businesses coming into Nashville, so it makes growing your business a lot easier whenever you have an economy that is booming as opposed to the rest of the country that is still struggling.

What is one unique aspect of owning your own company?

Flexibility with scheduling. It does allow me to travel to meet with different vendors as well as leisure travel. It allows me to basically get around and meet a lot of new people, whereas a typical desk job wouldn’t allow me to do that.

What is the greatest advantage of being an NFIB member?

Being able to provide my input to legislators and to be involved in the process of legislation that will directly affect me. Being able to have a voice to me is very valuable. Jim Brown, our state director here, has just been absolutely fantastic by always promoting members’ businesses. I can’t tell you how many people have come in here and shopped with us because of Jim Brown. He’s just fantastic.

What do you like to do off the clock?

I’m a musician. I also like to do home improvement projects and travel. I play bass and guitar, as does everybody in Nashville.
