NFIB/NJ: Senate President is Spiking the Football with Minimum Wage "Celebration"

Date: May 28, 2014

Trenton (May 28, 2014) – Taking a tour of New Jersey small businesses to
“celebrate” the minimum wage increase is like taking a tour of the Jersey Shore
to celebrate Hurricane Sandy, said the National
Federation of Independent Business (NFIB)
today.

“Most small
business owners won’t be celebrating,” said NFIB State Director Laurie Ehlbeck.
“And when the effects of this law filter through the economy the Senate
President won’t be celebrating either.”

NFIB represents
thousands of small business owners in New Jersey who warned that the law, which
increases the minimum every year, automatically based on inflation, will force
some employers to cut hours for workers, replace them with technology or avoid
creating new jobs.  Young workers will be
hit hardest, they say.

“It’s easy to see
why the unions are celebrating.  They
spent a fortune to get this passed because it guarantees them a pay raise every
year,” said Ehlbeck.  “Small business
owners are guaranteed higher costs every year.
Entry-level job seekers are guaranteed a lower demand for their
labor.  Political stagecraft like this
bus tour can’t alter the laws of economics.”
