NFIB/California State Director Profile: Tom Scott

Date: August 04, 2015

In late July 2015, NFIB announced that Tom Scott joined the California office as its state director. Scott comes to NFIB/California from California Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse, where he served as the executive director for nearly 20 years. He has also worked at all levels of government, including positions in the offices of Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich, former State Senator John Seymour, former U.S. Senator Pete Wilson and as a special assistant for intergovernmental affairs at the U.S. Department of Commerce under Robert Mosbacher.

“In my previous position, I focused primarily on legal reform issues,” Scott says. “NFIB will allow me to continue to be passionate about that issue, but I will have the ability to get into issues I am also very concerned about that face small business.”

Scott says he is looking forward to working with a great team of people to put NFIB in the front row before legislators and the media.

“CEO Magazine has listed California dead last for the past 10 years for its business climate,” Scott says. “Things are not improving. California’s small businesses continue to face huge threats. Property taxes, increased gas taxes, tax on services, shakedown lawsuits, increased healthcare costs and increased drastic environmental regulations. NFIB will be front and center to stop this attack.”

With such a list of issues to tackle, Scott says his biggest challenge will be making sure the NFIB/California team is on top of as many key issues as possible, but it’s a challenge he’s passionate about.

When off the clock, Scott enjoys playing golf, for the social nature of the sport as well as the challenge, and spending time with his wife, Karen. The two have lived in Folsom, California, with their Welsh Corgi, Rocket, since 1997, and Scott currently serves on the City of Folsom Planning Commission. He earned a B.A. in Political Science from California State University, Long Beach and a Master’s degree in Public Administration in Intergovernmental Management from the University of Southern California
