How did you become a
small business owner and why?

I basically grew up in the business. My mother and father
bought a small, little grocery store in Luverne, Alabama, in 1971, and from
there, I grew up in the business. They bought a second store in 1975, and we
just opened another in Evergreen on Nov. 19, 2014.

What is the best part of
your day?

Being with people. Being with our employees and being with our
customers.

What does being a small
business owner allow you to do that most others don’t get to enjoy?

We have flexibility. Our people have the flexibility to make
changes and do what needs to be done on a daily basis without having to deal
with the corporate mentality.

What makes Alabama a
good place for your business?

It’s a great place for every business entity. And we have great
help from NFIB in the state to help us stay on top of the issues and allow us
to do what we need to do to be competitive.

What has been your
biggest mistake so far?

Trying to micromanage everything.

What advice would you
give other small business owners?

Trust your people and let them use their creativity and
knowledge. They will surprise you with the things they can do for you.

How has NFIB helped you
run your small business?

NFIB has gotten involved greatly in the years since I’ve been a
member. It’s grown and offered more opportunities and benefits for the business
community. I’m proud to be a member. NFIB is a great organization. I really
wish that I were more involved than I actually am on the leadership council.
Ms. Rosemary Elebash [NFIB/Alabama state director] has done an excellent job. I
have got to tell you, NFIB for the state of Alabama, if it’s not the best, it’s
got to be one of the best in the nation. I’m proud to be a part of it.

What do you like to do
off the clock?

Spend time with my family, which is rare.
