Des Moines (April 1, 2014) – Most of the top candidates for US Senate in Iowa
participated recently in a forum
sponsored by the National Federation of
Independent Business (NFIB) that drew statewide news coverage and elevated small business issues in a race
that national political watchers say could determine which party controls
Congress.
“Washington
policies have a big impact on local businesses and all of the candidates who
participated came with their own perspective,” said NFIB Iowa State Director
Kristin Failor. “This is an important
race for Iowa but it has big implications for the country as well and we’re
very pleased to have made small business issues a central part of the
conversation.”
Participants
included State Senator Joni Ernst, Mark
Jacobs, Matt Whitaker and Sam Clovis, who are competing in a hotly
contested Republican primary race to succeed retiring US Senator Tom
Harkin. Congressman Bruce Braley, the clear frontrunner for the Democratic
Party nomination, declined NFIB’s invitation to participate.
The exchange was
moderated by veteran Iowa political reporters who ran the candidates through
all of the hot issues, like health care, federal spending, regulations and even
education policy.
“It was an
interesting exchange because each of the candidates comes with a different
perspective,” said Failor. “What was
most interesting is that all of them talked about their own personal experience
in small business. Most of our members
would agree that if there’s one thing lacking in Washington, it’s that kind of
experience.”
