Legislature: Stop Hiding Behind Automatic Increases

Voting “yes on one” will
repeal future taxes and hold politicians accountable

Boston (October 15, 2014): Today the National Federation of Independent Business
(NFIB) encouraged voters to vote “yes on one” and repeal the annual increase of
Massachusetts gas tax which falls disproportionately on small businesses and
allows the legislature to hide behind an automatic tax increase.

“Had the gas tax been tied to
inflation since our last increase, it would have resulted in a 36 cents per
gallon tax today – 50% higher than our current tax rate.” Said NFIB State
Director Bill Vernon. “The people that we elect to represent us in Boston,
fearful of having to face their constituents, have instituted the automatic
increase. This November, voters have the chance to right this wrong and vote
YES on Question one.”

The state recently hiked the gas
tax by 14%, and regardless of how the vote goes, the 24 cents per gallon
increase will remain in effect, allowing lawmakers room to repair
infrastructure as needed.

NFIB, representing 8,000 small
business owners across Massachusetts, has heard from its members overwhelmingly
that on November 4th, voters should correct their legislature, protect their
pocketbooks, support responsible governance, and repeal the automatic increase
in the gas tax by voting yes on Question one.
