NFIB North Carolina Member Profile: Frank Williams of PR firm Pioneer Strategies

Date: March 15, 2015

Frank Williams, president, lead strategist and sole employee of PR firm Pioneer Strategies in Leland, North Carolina, explains how he came to work for himself, offers his advice to focus the direction of a business and talks about his goals.

How did you become a
small business owner and why?

I always wanted to work for myself. I just always had that
urge. I left a sales job years ago that I wasn’t pleased with and started doing
freelance PR work, which is what my degree was in, while I was job hunting. And
it just took off. That’s what I’ve been doing ever since.

What is the best part of
your day?

My first cup of coffee. No, but really, anything where I have a
chance to help a client accomplish their goals or further their business or
organization.

What does owning your
own business allow you to do that most others don’t get to enjoy?

I think just the flexibility and being able to control my own
schedule. Jokingly, people say they get to work half days—you just have to
choose which 12 hours. There are a lot of long hours, but I can work in my
office or I can take my laptop to a coffee shop near the beach if I want to as
long as I’ve got Internet access and mobile phone access.

What advice would you
give other small business owners?

Know exactly what you want to do and why you want to do it.
Another thing, and this is something very important, if you’re going to own a
business, know what you want that business to do for you personally. Do you
want freedom? Do you want to spend more time with your children? Know what you
want and make sure you build your business around your personal goals.

What do you like to do
off the clock?

I love watching sports. I like to fish, although I’m not very
good at it. And I like action movies. In the past year I’ve been writing my first book. It’s a novel that will
hopefully be done in a few months here. It’s set in two years from now and it’s
about how a group of people tries to survive after the American government
collapses.
