NFIB Named Top Grassroots Mobilizer

Date: July 24, 2015

In a survey of Washington D.C. influencers, NFIB was recognized as a political leader.

NFIB rose to the top in bottom-up lobbying efforts, according to a new survey

APCO Worldwide named NFIB as the national leader in grassroots mobilization this week, based on a survey measuring the effectiveness of trade groups. The consulting firm interviewed 301 people from public and private sectors.

“It’s a very important recognition because it reinforces our reputation as one of the most influential business groups in the country,” says Jack Mozloom, NFIB’s director of media and communications. “It distinguishes NFIB in the political space as a group that should be taken seriously. It gives us credibility among journalists and opinion makers, which leads to more frequent and more positive news coverage. And it reminds members of Congress that NFIB speaks for many of their constituents. That’s a very big advantage when we’re going up against other organizations, like the labor unions, which have a lot more money.”

Participants in the survey were asked to rate associations in categories like unified voice, lobbying, media relations, member representation, membership mobilization and multilateral impact, among others.

This recognition comes at a time when 150 business owners and NFIB members are on Capitol Hill this week speaking with their representatives about the issues affecting the small biz community across the country: the cost of regulations, the burden of increased taxes and the challenges Obamacare is presenting.

“Grassroots activism is key to our public education efforts,” Mozloom says. “We have a very talented staff in Washington and in the states whose members do a great job of explaining small business concerns to lawmakers and journalists. But our members are far better at explaining how government policies affect small business. So a big part of our federal and state legislative strategy is to let our members do the talking.”

Associations affiliated with the healthcare industry received most of the distinctions, with pharmaceutical representative PhRMA leading in seven of the 15 categories and the American Hospital Association leading in three.
