What is the best part of your day?

I derive the greatest joy and satisfaction from creating and the interactions and processes related to creating. I experience that on a practical, daily basis in a variety of ways… First, it is absolutely thrilling to be building Trinitas as a business. The heart of a business is its people, so I dedicate a significant amount of my personal time and energy into the recruitment and retention of outstanding talent – true industry expert professionals. The enjoyment comes when I get to work with these outstanding individuals and see the value that they bring to the work that we do at Trinitas. Trinitas’ team members are one of the key ingredients to our historical success and our future growth. Secondly, I enjoy the pursuit of new opportunities. These can come in a variety of forms, but a simple example is a potential new student housing development opportunity. Every project has its own unique opportunities and challenges and our job is to apply our experience and knowledge to the situation to create the best potential project for that community. That, for me, is invigorating.

What has been your biggest mistake so far?

I have certainly made plenty. If you are not making mistakes, then you are not working hard enough. Early in my career, I did not recognize the value of hiring truly talented staff and I did not delegate accordingly. It stunted our growth as I proved to be a bottleneck for progress. Today, we deliberately create staffing plans for the following year so that our human resources do not create pain points for the successful achievement of our business plans.

What advice would you give other small business owners?

We struggle with thinking too small. I think that small business owners can easily get bogged down in day-to-day matters and fire drills and forget to step back and plan how to continue to grow the business. When we do plan, we do not dream big enough because we think too much about our own personal strengths and weaknesses and fail to take into account the strengths of existing or future staff. You won’t get to the moon unless you aim for it.

Why did you join NFIB?

I joined NFIB because of its unique focus on representing the interests of small business owners and its commitment to not be hijacked by large business. NFIB is the most powerful, effective, and influential voice of the small business owner.

What do you like to do off the clock?

Both my family and my church are very important to me. My wife and I have four young children. I am a deacon in my local church and enjoy serving in a variety of ministries there.
