NFIB Endorses Jim Oberweis for U.S. Senate

Date: September 29, 2014

The National Federation of Independent Business, Illinois’ and the nation’ leading small-business association, today endorsed Jim Oberweis for U.S. Senate.
“Jim Oberweis is the clear pro-business candidate,” said Lisa Goeas, NFIB vice president for Political and Grassroots. “Jim Oberweis has first-hand experience running a business. He understands how government red tape, regulations and high taxes make it hard for small businesses to grow and create jobs.”
Kim Clarke Maisch, state director of NFIB/Illinois, said, “As a member of the Illinois Senate, Jim Oberweis earned a 100-percent NFIB Voting Record. He agrees with our members that an overly complicated tax code hurts job growth. He understands that Obamacare is creating confusion and comes with hidden costs to small businesses. He supports Illinois’ small businesses, and small business supports Jim Oberweis.”
Oberweis is running to unseat Sen. Dick Durbin, who has earned only a 25-percent lifetime Voting Record with NFIB. So far during the 113th Congress, Durbin has not voted with NFIB on a single key vote, supporting a 30-percent increase in the federal minimum wage (S. 2223), opposing a tax increase on small businesses (S.Amdt. 156) and voting to uphold the estate tax (S.Amdt. 307), leaving in place a giant hurdle that makes it difficult for owners to pass their small businesses to their children and grandchildren.
“Jim Oberweis clearly understands the challenges facing Illinois’ small-business owners, their employees and their families,” Maisch said. “Our members are counting on him, just as the senator can count on our members’ support on Election Day.”
NFIB has over 11,000 dues-paying members in Illinois representing a cross section of the state’s economy. Oberweis’ endorsement comes from the NFIB SAFE (Save America’ Free Enterprise) Trust, the association’s political action committee, and is based on the candidate’s positions regarding key small-business issues including health care, taxes, and labor and regulatory issues.
Small-business owners and their employees vote in high numbers and are known for actively recruiting friends, family members and acquaintances to go to the polls. NFIB will encourage its members to help turn out the small-business vote on Election Day.
