NFIB Doubts Brown’s Claim, He Won’t Raise Taxes

Annapolis (October 14, 2014): The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) today called on Lieutenant Governor Brown to reconcile his no tax increase pledge with his campaigns website which states:

“While we do not see the need to raise taxes in the foreseeable future, we must pursue comprehensive tax reform in order to grow Maryland’s economy.  We will look at all revenue streams at the federal, state and local levels to ensure we have the resources we need to support our priorities. Our tax code should reflect our values, including a commitment to providing relief for working and middle class families; encouraging employers to create jobs in Maryland; and protecting our investments in education, safety, the environment, and health care.”

Small business owners expressed confusion over the inconsistencies between Brown’s debate performances and campaign platform citing his eight year long record of standing side-by-side with Governor O’Malley and managing to increase taxes on personal income, corporate income, sales, gas, tobacco and alcohol.

“Under the leadership of Lieutenant Governor Brown, Maryland has experienced well over $1 billion in tax hikes,” according to NFIB’s Regional Policy Director Tim Goodrich. “Small businesses are being crushed by overly burdensome taxes and unfortunately many businesses have left Maryland thanks to the O’Malley-Brown administration. Based on his record of across the board tax hikes, small business owners simply don’t believe Brown when he claims he won’t raise taxes further if elected.”

Brown’s opponent, Larry Hogan, has made it a top priority to cut taxes in order to make Maryland a business friendly state that allows for an environment where small business owners can thrive.
