NFIB APPLAUDS DISCUSSION OF CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION RESOLUTION

AUGUSTA (March 26, 2015) Today the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) applauds the discussion Ohio Governor john Kasich and Governor Paul LePage will have with interested legislators on the importance of passing a federal balanced budget resolution.

“NFIB has long supported Congressional action to pass a Balanced Budget Amendment because no matter how hard our state officials work to right the economy in Maine, if federal lawmakers are not being held to a high standard, they will continue to hurt our financial health.” Said NFIB Maine State Director David Clough. “It is vital to small businesses that federal lawmakers be held accountable for driving up our country’s debt and weakening our economic standing throughout the world.”

North Dakota became the latest in a series of states to pass a resolution in a nationwide effort to use the Article V process outlined in the U.S. Constitution to move Congress towards adopting a Balanced Budget Amendment to address the countries $18 trillion debt. Thus far, 27 states have passed a resolution calling for a constitutional convention to draft a balanced budget amendment, sending powerful messages throughout the country as the momentum continues to build for this issue. Seven more states are needed to trigger the convention and small business in Maine is hoping that Governor Le Page and legislators will work with Governor Kasich to make the pine tree state one of them.

“Small business owners are fed up with the federal government’s failure to address the basic budgeting that every citizen and small business owner must adhere to in their daily activities. NFIB believes it is time for the states and citizens to use the powers provided by the founding fathers in our Constitution to put an end to this irresponsible behavior,” Continued Clough, “There is no greater issue that promises a more lasting impact on all Americans of this and future generations than getting the nations spending under control.”

Governors Kasich and LePage are expected to meet with interested lawmakers today to discuss Maine’s passage of a resolution. Small business will be paying close attention to this important issue and looks forward to Maine joining the fight to keep federal spending under control.
