New York Businesses Lack Representation on Gubernatorial Advisory Committee

Date: August 04, 2015

In another sign that Gov. Andrew Cuomo is out of touch with New York’s small business community, business representatives are severely under represented on a new advisory council that will advise the governor on key small business issues, ranging across 14 industries, from construction to trucking.

“There’s not a broad business organization represented there,” NFIB/New York State Director Mike Durant told the Albany Business Review.

Of the 15 groups represented, according to the Albany Business Review, there are five unions, five worker-advocacy groups and just four business representatives.

Durant also said he worries the recommendations could result in additional burdensome regulations for small business owners.

“Regulatory changes for small employers tend to have dramatic impacts,” Durant said. “Does it open them up to more lawsuits, does it open them up to more human resources issues… My biggest concern when I see things like this comes down to frivolous lawsuits, that an employee will start suing because they feel slighted.”
