The Transportation Trust Fund is nearly bankrupt
and lawmakers are considering raising the gas tax to fund it. Governor Christie
has said that all options are on the table
The bill proposed would increase the
current gas tax by 25 cents per gallon. It’s expected that the average motorist
would spend $300 more a year on gasoline. This would have a major impact
not only the average driver, but also the New Jersey small businesses that
depend on transportation and those who own gas stations.
A poll
released by Quinnipiac University shows that 58
percent of New Jersey residents are opposed to raising the tax which hasn’t
been increased in 26 years.
