California NFIB Young Entrepreneur Foundation Award Winner: Shayne Myers of Shayne Myers Cattle Co.

Shayne Myers was seven years old when she showed her first heifer, and it’s “been my number one passion since then,” she says. Myers attributes her love for the livestock business to her grandfather and uncle, who have been raising cattle since before she was born. If it weren’t for their influence, she would have never developed a passion for it or started her own cattle business: Shayne Myers Cattle Co.

While Myers’ lives in California, her cattle are located in Nebraska, where her grandfather and uncle live. She spends summers and school breaks there, but the distance has been the hardest part of being a business owner. “I do love it so much and I want to be out with my cows every single day,” she says.

Myers’ cattle company is a cow-to-calf operation, and the cattle are raised specifically for showing and breeding. In the fall, Myers will leave to attend Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, where she will be closer to her cattle and able to continue running her company.

Hutchinson offers Myers a great opportunity to participate in judging livestock, and she plans to eventually transfer to a four-year college to study animal science and agricultural economics.

Eventually, Myers wants to become an agricultural lobbyist while managing her family’s heifer, semen and embryo sales and expanding the family business, Hoffman Ranch, which currently already sells worldwide.  Her dream is to someday become the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.

The success of Myers’ cattle business has been a big source of validation for all of the hard work she’s put into it. Her encouragement to other young entrepreneurs is to pursue their own interests and dreams. “If your business is what you love, then invest all of your time and energy in it.”
